Meet Kerry
Kerry has worked for 5 years for a large government organisation. She’s risen rapidly and is now leading an area responsible for significant projects that are vital to the organisation’s overall success. Kerry believes that her leadership position gives her a chance to make a real difference in an area she cares. However, there are challenges. She feels like she’s drowning in under the volume of work, she’s struggling to get her ideas accepted by the organisation, and two of her team members are not performing. Sometimes Kerry thinks it’s time to move on, but she doesn’t want to because in so many ways this job and this organisation are just what she’s been looking for.
Kerry’s story is typical of many leaders.
They love the chance to influence outcomes in areas they care about and there are parts of their roles that they really enjoy. However, the frustrations which are typical in organisations and the sheer amount of work are making things difficult for them.
This shouldn’t be a surprise. Leadership, whether at team leader level or in senior management can be rewarding, but it’s also difficult to say the least.
Here’s the good news ….
The good news is that all leaders can get better. All leaders (Kerry included) have a natural aptitude in some areas while they find other things more difficult. While Kerry can’t fully control all that happens to her in her role she can learn to operate in a manner that minimises the frustrations and helps her to become more effective.
All leaders need to continuously develop. They owe it to the people they serve, the organisations they work for and the people who report to them. Above all they owe it to themselves.
